Debit & Credit 5.0: New Design, Widgets
It has been six years since Debit & Credit was first released on the App Store in 2014. Over those years it has received a huge number of new features and the time has come for a new design.
The iOS version of the app has a completely new look that supports Dark Mode:
As you might have noticed from the screenshots, the iOS app now supports the “All Accounts” section that was previously supported only in the Mac app. Similarly, transaction amounts can now be colour-coded in the iOS app.
If you have previously used Debit & Credit, it won’t take long for you to get used to the new design. The biggest change in terms of interactions is probably the tap and hold gesture that reveals additional actions for accounts:
The Mac app was also updated to match the new macOS Big Sur design style. One of the most prominent new features is the new toolbar that blends in with your content on the right side. You will notice that the app is now using your system accent colour (which can be changed in the system preferences).
Account Icons
Another new feature of this release is the account icons. You can now assign a custom icon to an account or a folder. Folder icons are handy since they apply to folder accounts as well (e.g. you can use a single icon for business accounts and the relevant folder).
Please note that by default icons are enabled only for folders in the Mac app. You can change that by enabling the relevant setting in the “View” menu in the menu bar.
Right now there are 50 icons to choose from but I expect this selection to grow in the future:
New Widgets
There are three new widgets both for iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur: budgets, accounts, and scheduled transactions. The widgets are configurable and you can set your custom background color to make them match your wallpaper. You can also set a specific budget or an account for the relevant widget if you want to.
Compatibility
The new iOS app now requires iOS 14 to be installed. I don’t expect this to be a problem since all devices running iOS 13 can be updated to the new version of iOS.
The Mac app now requires macOS 10.14 Mojave. I spent a lot of time keeping the latest version of Debit & Credit to work great both in Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave.
I am very proud of Debit & Credit, it has exceeded my initial expectations and I hope that you will like it too!
